Phase I: Proof of Concept

It can be challenging to fund the start of ambitious projects. As such, we split the project into fundable components in Phase I. Each part is semi-independent and can be funded separately based on the interest of the donor. Phase II: Build and Scale

Phase II cannot be done piecemeal. A serious and dedicated partner is required, because integrating the pieces will take patience, time, and investment. This is an estimate of the 5 year funding for the entire project, starting at the end of the the 2nd year of Phase I. This would be additional funding to Phase I. The manufacturing costs in years 3, 4 and 5 can be covered through device sales in Revenues. In addition, at least a part of the survey cost can be covered by testing revenues. Additional support and financing

Dan Kittredge and the BFA will provide in-kind support in communicating the results of the crop survey through an active social media campaign, as well as dissemination of the survey through BFA’s many talks and classes around the country. Dan Kittredge will also identify research partners who can contribute to and expand the survey.

The BFA has received $75,000 from the Gaia Fund, $25,000 from the Lattner Foundation, and $20,000 for general operating expenses from the Whitman fund. The Real Food Campaign is the BFA’s primary initiative of 2017 and these grants will fund BFA staff to support this project through the coming year. In addition, the BFA received $25,000 from the Community Foundation for San Benito County which is to be directly invested in engineering, calibrating and prototyping the Bionutrient Meter of the Real Food Campaign.

The BFA is preparing to launch a crowd-funding campaign through its website this fall to raise funds for projects related to this survey – specifically the development of a low-cost, open-source handheld instrument for measuring nutrient density and the software to collect, share, and analyze the resulting data. This campaign will extend through the fall, culminating in the annual BFA conference.
