The scientific link between soil, food and health
The disease burden of chronic lifestyle diseases costs Europe more than 700 billion euros per year. In addition to this already enormous financial pressure, the RIVM expects that the number of people with one or more chronic diseases in the Netherlands will increase sharply - from 1.5 to almost 12 million in 2050 (Public Health Future Exploration 2024).
One of the most important risk factors for chronic disease is our diet. Not only the food choices we make, but also the quality of the food plays a role in this. Research increasingly shows that the soil microbiome is closely linked to the human intestinal microbiome. In this symposium we therefore explore the connection between agricultural methods, soil vitality, food quality and human health.
What has research shown so far? What is currently being worked on? How can we apply these new insights and how do we bring them to the people? And, last but not least: how would that be financed?

Farmer and holistic systems-thinker Dan Kittredge is making it his life’s work to increase the nutritional quality of the food we grow and eat. For the past 30 years Dan has been farming organically in Massachusetts and since 2010, as founder and chief executive of the Bionutrient Food Association, coordinating cutting-edge research into plant nutrient density.
Dan will delve into the practicalities of revitalising our land to create the conditions in which our plants’ microbiomes – and in turn our own gut biome – can flourish. He will share his vision of how we can do so at scale and, in so doing, reverse chronic disease while sequestering consequential amounts of carbon. He will also reveal highlights from the open-source work he has been engaged in to empower consumer choice and build transparency in the food system.
Whether you’re a farmer, market gardener, a domestic or armchair gardener you will go away inspired with a keener understanding of the intricate interplay between soil health, plant vitality and human wellbeing. TMG REAG 8. Soil Life Conference and Exhibition
What does TMG REAG VIII Soil Life Conference and Exhibition mean?
This will be the 8th year that TMG, the Soil Renewal Farmers' Association, will organise its conference on regenerative agriculture (REAG is the acronym for 'regenerative agriculture'), and as the number of participants has grown exponentially every year, we thought big and created the first Central European regenerative conference and exhibition, which will not only provide professional knowledge on soil life, but also sustainable gastronomy. This event is unique in Central Europe in this field.
The event will feature exciting and colourful presentations from successful practising farmers, innovative researchers and experts in soil regeneration from both national and international fields. There will also be a large-scale machinery exhibition where you can see cutting-edge technology related to regenerative agriculture. During the direct seeding demonstration, several manufacturers will showcase their machines on a blanket plant table on site.
And for those interested in sustainable gastronomy, there will be lectures and workshops on fermentation, sourdough, pulses - everything that goes into environmentally conscious eating.
What is the purpose of the event?
By demonstrating regenerative agriculture, we want to show farmers the way to a sustainable and profitable agriculture. After all, the vision of our association is to make the Carpathian Basin green in winter and summer!
We believe that only healthy soil can grow healthy food. The aim of our association is to spread knowledge about sustainable gastronomy in the Carpathian Basin, so that the health of families is a priority alongside soil health.
We want to show that there is life without ploughing, and what life is like! There is a way of growing crops without ploughing, and we will explain the theoretical and practical elements of this in detail. For many people, in very large areas, the question of how to survive in adverse conditions is a vital one. Many people also want to take steps to live healthy and fulfilling lives, and a fundamental reform of their nutritional routine is an essential part of this.

9.30am-11.30am - Session 1: “The Latest on Nutrient Density”
After coining the term Nutrient Density to refer to the variation of nutrient levels in food in 2007,
The Bionutrient Food Association (BFA) and the Bionutrient Institute (BI) have been working to raise awareness about this important topic for more than 15 years. This presentation will cover the history of the use of the term, the research accomplished to characterize the variation of nutrient levels in food, the research to identify what causes nutrient variation, and progress in meters developed to assess that nutrient variation by anyone. As well, we will cover current research, upcoming market opportunities, and the vision for how this exciting work could serve to profoundly disrupt the dynamics of the food supply. Can agriculture meaningfully reverse climate imbalances, and be used to reverse chronic disease as well? We think so. Come hear how and why!

12.30pm-2.30pm - Session 2: "Principles to Produce Nutrient Dense Food" or “Principles of Biological Systems”
Nutrient Dense crops are the byproducts of well functioning biological systems. This workshop will cover a number of critical environmental conditions and management practices necessary for the production of these more flavorful, aromatic, nutritious, pest and disease resistant harvests. The foundational paradigm of how plants have evolved to operate in relation to their environments will be covered, along with practical suggestions having to do with seed quality, mineralization, minimal soil disturbance, inoculation, in season monitoring, integrating cover crops, managing for soil aeration and hydration, and intention.
2.30-4pm - Farm Walk
An optional addition to the day, walk the land with Dan and local arable farmer Simon Osborne.
Explore how the place runs and how careful monitoring and decision-making can help a farm thrive.
Dan doesn't know where we're taking him for this part yet, so it will be a surprise for him!
5-7pm - Dinner with Dan (ticketed special event).

Out of these efforts was born the Bionutrient Institute, which has engineered a prototype of a hand-held consumer spectrometer designed to test nutrient density at point of purchase. Via the Bionutrient Meter, the goal is to empower consumers to choose for nutrient quality and thereby leverage economic incentives to drive full system regeneration.

GROUNDED is an annual conference, a field day and a food festival showcasing all the great thinking on how to farm better. The inaugural event is going to be held at our 70-acre mixed farm near Cygnet, south of Hobart, Tasmania, in early December, to coincide with World Soil Day. (If you don’t know the date, there’s no judgement here – but it is the 5th of December.) The event will pave the way for bigger GROUNDED events, including on mainland Australia, run by the same team.
