Bionutrient Meter

BFA’s handheld spectrometer

We work to support consumers and growers of food in determining which food is nutritionally superior, and identify factors that influence crop quality. To further achieve this, we’ve developed a handheld Bionutrient Meter that, with a flash of light, can offer nutritional information about food, crops and soil.

We are no longer producing the Bionutrient Meter.  We’re proud to have proven the concept to the industry, via our lab, studies and prediction models.  However, for the Bionutrient Meter to fulfill the vision of transparency, we must first develop a program of metrics and formulas that represent, to the best of our current understanding,  what quality is.  This includes a data set of deeper assessment of nutrients.  Our goal now is to build that data set.   We began with our beef study, and we’re expanding into Oats, Wheat, Almonds and Blueberries starting in Q4 2023 and into 2024.

If you’re interested in sending in samples to be a part of these studies, or to request a study on another crop, please reach out to partners@bionutrient.org

BFA Garden Kit

Brix Kit

Refractometer, sap press/vice grips, Brix chart

$144

The refractometer in our Brix Kit is currently the most accessible of tools available for discerning quality. While not a measure of nutrient density, it is generally understood that the refractive index, or brix, of a given fruit or vegetable correlates closely to quality and taste. Refractometers are an easy, low-cost test widely used among growers for whom quality is important. But you don't need to be a farmer - you can just as easily use a refractometer on produce you buy from the store to get a better understanding of what you are eating, or who has the best carrots at the market.

Electro-Conductivity Meter

Meter, calibration solution

$144

The direct soil Electro-Conductivity Meter is an essential tool for the grower to have in their toolbox. Soil electrical conductivity (EC) is a measure of the electrical charge in the soil, where too much or too little can hinder optimal plant growth. The measure of conductivity provides a valuable indicator of soil health and the functioning processes foundational to crop quality and yields, plant nutrient availability, and activity of soil microorganisms. The EC meter provides the grower with a critical snapshot that underpins the health of their soil, and is useful for addressing shortcomings or adjusting strategies in the growing season

As a membership organization, the BFA exists to support its members in engaging biological systems to grow nutrient dense food through land management and educational opportunities. This includes our tools for growers, such as the Brix kit, refractometers and the Bionutrient Meter, as well opportunities to test samples through our lab for deeper insight of your management practices. We also engage luminaries throughout the food and agricultural, science and research communities, and additionally from the health, wellness and subtle energies professions through our Soil & Nutrition Conference.
All are welcome to apply for membership. Thanks for your interest!
